After 20 years as assistant-trainer to Patrick Shaw, Ricardo was granted a trainer’s licence on the 15th December 2016. Originally a stud farm assistant in South Africa, Ricardo went on to secure an assistant-trainer’s licence from the South African Jockey Club in 1993. He first worked with trainer Joey Soma before joining Shaw in 1998. Ricardo and Patrick enjoyed many successes back home, a trend which continued when the pair moved to Singapore in 2001. From Day 1 Ricardo was an integral part of Shaw’s multiple successes at the highest level at Kranji, including a Singapore champion trainer title in 2011 and, of course, the rise to the top of Singapore’s most famous racehorse, Rocket Man.
Ricardo with support from his assistant Trainer Jacci De Tert did not take long to cement himself as one of Singapore’s premier trainers, finishing second in the trainers premiership in his first season with an impressive 65 wins striking at 12.72%. Ricardo’s first season included 3 group wins: the Group 3 Fortune Bowl, The Group 3 Saas Fee Stakes and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. In addition to this Ricardo was invited to the prestigious international Dubai World Cup, where Ricardo saddled his first international runner the multiple group one winner ‘Iron Horse’ Quechua
